Resource 1

AEO Readiness Checklist

Walk through each category below. Every unchecked item is a gap between your content and the retrieval criteria AI models use to select sources.

Structured Data & Schema

  • Organization schema with logo, sameAs, and contact High Impact
  • FAQ schema on service and product pages
  • Article schema with author, datePublished, dateModified
  • HowTo schema for process-oriented content
  • BreadcrumbList schema for site hierarchy signals

Entity Optimization

  • Primary entity (brand name) consistent across all pages High Impact
  • Key personnel listed with credentials and bios
  • Service entities clearly defined with unique descriptions
  • Industry and geographic entities tagged where relevant
  • Wikidata or Knowledge Graph alignment verified

Content Architecture

  • Clear H1 → H2 → H3 hierarchy on every page High Impact
  • Concise, factual answers within first 2 sentences of each section
  • Internal linking between topically related pages
  • Content freshness: key pages updated within 90 days
  • llms.txt or /ai-info page for direct LLM crawl guidance

Source Authority Signals

  • Domain authority above 30 (check via Ahrefs/Moz) Track
  • Backlinks from .edu, .gov, or industry publications
  • Published research, original data, or proprietary methodology
  • Named author bios with verifiable credentials
  • Active presence on Wikipedia, Crunchbase, or industry directories
  • Third-party citations already appearing in AI search results
How to use this: Score each item as complete, partial, or missing. Prioritize High Impact items first — these are the factors with the strongest correlation to AI citation frequency in our benchmark data.

Content Audit Template

Score each page against the five dimensions AI models evaluate when selecting sources. Focus on pages that drive business — services, key blogs, case studies.

Dimension Weight What to Evaluate Scoring Criteria Score Guide
Crawlability 20% Can AI crawlers access and parse the content? Check: render method (SSR vs CSR), robots.txt directives, JavaScript dependency, iframe usage. All content server-rendered, no JS dependency, no iframe-only sections 8–10 SSR, clean HTML
4–7 Partial JS
0–3 SPA/iframe
Entity Clarity 25% Are the primary entities (brand, people, services) named explicitly? Is the page’s topic unambiguous to a language model? Named entities in H1, first paragraph, and schema markup. Topic clear from title + meta. 8–10 Named + schema
4–7 Named only
0–3 Vague/generic
Citation Potential 25% Does the page contain quotable facts, statistics, or frameworks an AI would want to reference? Original data, specific claims with evidence, named methodology, expert quotes 8–10 Original data
4–7 Curated insights
0–3 Generic advice
Freshness 15% When was the page last updated? Does the content reflect current industry state? Updated within 90 days, references current year data, dateModified in schema 8–10 <90 days
4–7 90–180 days
0–3 >180 days
Authority 15% Is the page backed by verifiable author credentials? Do external sources link to or cite this content? Author bio with credentials, backlinks from relevant domains, third-party references 8–10 Expert + cited
4–7 Expert only
0–3 No attribution

How to Run the Audit

  1. List your top 20 pages by organic traffic or business impact
  2. Score each page 0–10 across all five dimensions
  3. Calculate the weighted total (max 10.0)
  4. Pages scoring below 5.0 need immediate attention — these are invisible to AI retrieval
  5. Pages scoring 7.0+ are your best candidates for AI citation optimization

Scoring Scale

0–25: Invisible Your brand is not mentioned in AI responses. Competitors are capturing this space.
26–50: Emerging Occasional mentions, but not as a primary recommendation. Content gaps exist.
51–75: Visible Regularly cited in responses. Room to optimize for primary-source positioning.
76–100: Dominant Consistently the first or primary citation. Strong entity authority and content freshness.

How to Run Your Scorecard

  1. Choose 3 buying-intent queries your prospects would ask (e.g., “best [your service] companies”, “[your service] for [your industry]”, “[competitor] vs alternatives”)
  2. Run each query in all 5 AI tools — note whether your brand appears, position, and context
  3. Score each engine 0–20 based on: mentioned (5pts), recommended (5pts), primary source (5pts), linked (5pts)
  4. Sum all five engine scores for your total (0–100)
  5. Repeat monthly to track trajectory — AI search results shift faster than traditional rankings
